Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is not an actual academy but rather an association. The organization is non-profit and exists in Canada to help maintain and recognize as well as promote and advance the Canadian film industry. The Academy helps celebrate those who make Canadian film great and their achievements within the industry including in film, television and online. The Academy is in essence the glue of the industry and regulates the profession and professionals in Canadian Film from actors to producers from coast to coast.

The Academy operates in both official Canadian languages; English and French and celebrates the achievements and accomplishments of those in both English and French film, television and media. The Screen Week hosted by the Academy, is a celebration of English tv and is a week long celebration through events and a number of platforms across the country. The French language television and successes is celebrated annually at the Prix Gemaux, typically held in the fall. This event has grown as the French language becomes more prominent in entertainment within Canada and across the world.

Another notable event hosted and held by The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is a The Canadian Screen Awards. These awards came to fruition as a result of two sister awards being combined: The Genie and Gemini awards. This star studded event continues to grow on an annual basis and draws stars and fans from all over the country and worldwide and is a prestigious event.

The Academy’s Mandate includes everything from the maintenance and development of awareness and appreciation of Canadian film and television to the dedication to offering professional development for those within the industry as well as awarding and honouring outstanding achievements in the industry both past and present. The Academy plays one of, if not the largest role in the success and development of the Canadian film and television industry.
